Nowruz International Project Founder and Director

Kutay Derin Kugay has been an avid music collector for over 50 years, was the Program Director for Door Dog Music Productions and co-founder of the San Francisco World Music Festival from 1999 to 2010. For nearly 30 years he has been recording world music musicians in US and presenting them in concerts and in his Music of the World radio show at KPFA 94.1FM in Berkeley, CA. He has been active in the world music area, hosting various radio programs throughout the Bay Area and internationally. Currently, and for the past 23 years, Kugay works at KPFA 94.1FM, Berkeley, as the producer and host of the Monday edition of Music of the World. His collection of archival records dating back to 1920s is one of the most extensive and rare in the US. He has been a lecturer and educator of Central Asian, Turkic, Kurdish, Middle Eastern and Lazuri music for a decade. He was an invited participant at the First Kurdish Music Conference in Diyarbakir in 2007. Through his record company 7/8 Music Productions he has presented and released CDs of some of most prominent artists in concerts and lectures from Iran, India, Turkey, Kurdistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Greece, Africa, Balkans, Europe and the Americas. He has published numerous cultural articles and has contributed his photographs to magazines. Kugay travels world wide collecting music and doing field studies in various cultures of Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Middle East. He started the 7/8 Music Productions record label and concert production company in 1996; supporting immigrant and marginalized master artists living in US and around the world. He has conducted music tours across the US, Europe and the Middle East. Kugay initiated and was one of the founders of the Green Yayla Culture, Arts and Ecology Festival in North-Eastern Turkey in 2006. He is also a member of the founders and currently the Development and Project Director of the Gola Culture, Arts and Ecology NGO in Istanbul, Turkey. He has a BA in painting/sculpture and a MA degree in fine arts and filmmaking and has made numerous documentary and fiction films in US, Germany and Turkey. Currently he is the founder and director of the Nowruz International Project and launching the new Black Sea and Caucasus Festival in association with the Gola NGO.
